VIVPS adds to new programs – Hanoi
VIVPS Vietnam
Check out these great volunteering programs in Vietnam and Cambodia.
Cambodia Orphanage Program
Mr Lee is the current Manager of the centre and is charged with the responsibility of caring for 98 children, ranging in age from 5yrs to 16yrs. The centre has a small English teaching classroom and also a computer room. The children have dormitory style rooms and separate shower blocks for the boys and girls. The amenities at the orphanage are very basic and the centre receives little Government assistance in terms of money. The centre is mainly reliant on tourists that occasionally visit, or volunteers who set up fundraising efforts before they come or after experiencing the centre.
The centre is located a distance of approximately 8 kilometres from the city centre and far away from the pleasantries of Phnom Phen. The centre has a garden where they attempt to grow vegetables for the children, and some, but very limited, recreational areas for the kids. Approximately half of the kids attend a state school in the morning, and the other half in the afternoons.
Volunteers will assist the local Khmer teachers for the first couple of days and then the roles reverse. Volunteers are also encouraged to help out in any other way that they can, possibly working in the garden, helping with the cooking and the cleaning up. Volunteers could even purchase some materials and paint a room or fix something that is broken. English teaching is important but we encourage VIVPS volunteers to give more than that. These centres are usually so under resourced that the simple things often mean the most.

Cost: One Off Placement fee of US$680. If the term is over 1 month then there is an additional fee of $160 per month beyond that time. VIVPS will provide transport to and from the centre and as the cost of petrol is so high in Cambodia then the placement fee is slightly higher than we would ask in Vietnam.
Accommodation: VIVPS will source accommodation to suit your needs although we do have a comfortable guest house available for only $130 per month.
Meals: Food is one of the big attractions in Cambodia and once you discover the local eateries you can eat dinner and have a drink with it for as little as $2.
Activities: Teaching Basic English to the Orphanage children with the assistance of a Khmer teacher. You will teach from 8am until 11am – and then from 1pm until 4pm. Volunteers are also asked to contribute in other ways and assist in other areas in any way they can.
Minimum Length of Stay: 2 weeks
Support: Airport Pick up
Orientation Program
Volunteers will have full VIVPS support everyday of the program
Spring Valley Village.

http://springvalleyvillage.wordpress.com/
This is the story of a dedicated and hardworking woman, striving to get help and support for the family’s and children of Spring Valley village.
My name is Everline Were, a community representative of spring valley slum village. Spring valley is a community where people live in abject poverty. we have a lot of destitute children and widows who have been orphaned by HIV AIDS. These children are on the streets begging and eating from the dustbins.
My work is to rehablitate these children from the streets back to school and also to assist the local widows. Already we have 150 children in our rehablitation centre, and they are on our feeding programme. We are assisting 50 widows and already we have started a small micro financed bussiness. They are preparing sweet potatoes and porriage selling locally. This bussiness was just started by a small amount of funding and it is generating something at the end of the day, but not enough for everyone.
We wish to increase the sales but due to lack of enough finance’s we are unable. We would like to request anybody to come to our aid and increase these sale’s by just a small percentage.
Looking forward for the best.
I am currently designing their blog and facebook profile, with the help of friends and volunteers on NABUUR, any help or support would be greatly appreciated. The more support these orphans get the better their chances of survival and a education.

Update August 2009
With the start of summer and more recession, more drought worldwide, Foundations and charities are struggling to cope with corporate sponsors such as GM, Chrysler & Banks and finance companies in trouble money no longer filters down to the poor and needy.
With peoples mortgages and real estate property prices dropping globally, Holidays and donations are a luxury, with every penny accounted for, the long term prospects are looking bleak, but eventually most will manage, but think of the poor orphans and villages where the life goes from meal to meal not week by week. with so little food stuff and supplies just a small drop in donations can mean many deaths and people starving.
Please take a moment and give a thought for those in need.
JULY/AUG.
Nothing is getting easier, groceries, petrol, etc are still rising almost daily, people who say the recession is almost over don’t live in the real world. In Hua Hin, more and more shops, business’s are closing daily, supermarkets are empty and the local wet markets are getting busier.
We are now living on 100 baht a day for food (2 dollars) we have to budget as much as possible so it’s mostly vegetarian for now, but vegetables and salad are expensive.
So I wont have much time for charity work as I need to find full time employment, so again the knock on effect, effects all.
