Cambodia Orphanage Program

Cambodia Orphanage Program

Cambodia Orphanage Program.

Mr Lee is the current Manager of the centre and is charged with the responsibility of caring for 98 children, ranging in age from 5yrs to 16yrs. The centre has a small English teaching classroom and also a computer room. The children have dormitory style rooms and separate shower blocks for the boys and girls. The amenities at the orphanage are very basic and the centre receives little Government assistance in terms of money. The centre is mainly reliant on tourists that occasionally visit, or volunteers who set up fundraising efforts before they come or after experiencing the centre.

The centre is located a distance of approximately 8 kilometres from the city centre and far away from the pleasantries of Phnom Phen. The centre has a garden where they attempt to grow vegetables for the children, and some, but very limited, recreational areas for the kids. Approximately half of the kids attend a state school in the morning, and the other half in the afternoons.

Volunteers will assist the local Khmer teachers for the first couple of days and then the roles reverse. Volunteers are also encouraged to help out in any other way that they can, possibly working in the garden, helping with the cooking and the cleaning up. Volunteers could even purchase some materials and paint a room or fix something that is broken. English teaching is important but we encourage VIVPS volunteers to give more than that. These centres are usually so under resourced that the simple things often mean the most.

Cost:  One Off Placement fee of US$680. If the term is over 1 month then there is an additional fee of $160 per month beyond that time. VIVPS will provide transport to and from the centre and as the cost of petrol is so high in Cambodia then the placement fee is slightly higher than we would ask in Vietnam.

Accommodation:  VIVPS will source accommodation to suit your needs although we do have a comfortable guest house available for only $130 per month.

Meals:  Food is one of the big attractions in Cambodia and once you discover the local eateries you can eat dinner and have a drink with it for as little as $2.

Activities: Teaching Basic English to the Orphanage children with the assistance of a Khmer teacher. You will teach from 8am until 11am – and then from 1pm until 4pm. Volunteers are also asked to contribute in other ways and assist in other areas in any way they can.

Minimum Length of Stay: 2 weeks

Support: Airport Pick up

Orientation Program

Volunteers will have full VIVPS support everyday of the program
